Regulating mushroom picking in Álava

Coinciding with the mushroom season, the Department of Agriculture for Álava Local Council has reminded mushroom pickers and mountain enthusiasts that, as of last year, the new decree for the regulation and management of the use of fungi, plants, flowers and berries in Álava is in force.

The decree delimits the picking of fungi and mushrooms to two kilos a day per person except in enclosed forest terrains.

One of the objectives is about enclosing the increasing commercial value of fungi and avoiding home growing or mass harvesting that put some species in danger and endangers the forest.

Also it is insisted that the decree prohibits mushroom picking throughout the night (from sunset to sunrise), that the harvest should be done in baskets or containers which enable them aerate. And with regards to the spores on the mushroom that can’t be removed using a rake or other tools to avoid altering the vegetable, it is still prohibited to tear them off.

For fungi with no culinary interest, but with scientific purposes, legislation establishes the limit to three units.
