Valdegovía Celebrates the Magical Night of San Juan in Villanueva

As every year, next Monday, June 23rd, the Valley of Valdegovía is getting ready to enjoy one of its most special evenings: San Juan Night. This year, the celebration will take place at the Municipal Sports Center in Villanueva de Valdegovía, with a full program of activities for all ages, organized by the local socio-cultural association ANEKA.

The afternoon will kick off at 5:00 p.m. with a forest bathing session, guided by a certified facilitator from the Association of Forest Bathing in Pinares and Merindades—a chance to reconnect with oneself and nature.

At the same time, there will be children’s activities, including the making of dreamcatchers using natural materials, for kids aged 5 and up. These activities will be conducted in both Basque and Spanish. Later, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., children can enjoy traditional popular games.

Also from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the evening’s San Juan rituals will take place, including the preparation of flowers and herbs, water rituals, and the creation of the famous San Juan ointment.

Music takes the stage at 8:00 p.m. with a rock concert by ONE MORE TIME, along with the opening of the San Juan festival bar (txosna).

At 9:00 p.m., the small bonfire will be lit for offerings of flowers from the valley. After the concert, around 10:00 p.m., the magical San Juan bonfire will be set alight—a symbolic ritual that welcomes the summer solstice with the power of fire and light.

Once the flames die down and the embers glow, the celebration will continue with Maider’s songs and guitar around the bonfire.
